New Penn State wrestling head coach Cael Sanderson spoke to about 150 supporters in Camp Hill Friday night, at a Penn State Sports dinner sponsored by the South Central Chapter of the Nittany Lion Club. PSU head baseball coach Robbie Wine spoke along with Coach Sanderson.
Other Penn State coaches and athletic administration were in attendance.
Coach Sanderson held a press conference before the event and the majority of the topics were his personal life, relating to the move from Ames, Iowa to State College, PA. He stated that he and his family are renting a house in State College since they have not sold their place in Iowa. In talking with him later, he stated that he has made the trip back to Iowa three times, to get things wrapped up.
He mentioned traveling first time by car, next by commercial airplane, and then the PSU plane, which he said with a smile was “nice.” He welcomed and thanked the crowd for their support, and has been overwhelmed with good wishes for recruiting and the upcoming season.
Coach Sanderson and his coaches will take the approach that all PSU wrestlers will be fighters on the mat, win or lose! - a trait taught to him by his father who was his coach and trainer.
Coach Sanderson is convinced that PSU will be a national contender and that he still has a lot of work to do to get the student athlete who wants to be an All-American and also succeed in the classroom. “Pennsylvania has the best prep wrestling in America” and his goal is to recruit them to come to Penn State. He specifically mentioned that he also will be recruiting from other surrounding states such as Ohio, New York and New Jersey.
Two of his assistants were with him, Casey Cunningham and Matt Dernlan. He poked fun at both, especially Casey, who was named PSU Head Assistant Coach this past week by Coach Sanderson. Matt will be the Director of Wrestling Operations for Nittany Lion Wrestling. Coach Sanderson fielded some questions from the attendees. The questions focused on his goal for turning the program to a National Champion contender... to work hard, and utilize the NCAA mandated 9.9 scholarships to its fullest advantage, stating that it is not easy, but he is up for the task.
In closing, I asked him if he is ready to go. Cael smiled and said... “Tom, I wish the season started tomorrow, as I really am excited to see Rec Hall packed and jammed!” He finished his talk at the podium- thanking all again and with a resounding... GO LIONS !!!
